James Willig, MD
Dr. Willig is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), who has served as the Informatics Director for the UAB HIV/AIDS Clinic (2005-2012), Director of Medical Informatics for UAB Health System Information Services (2012-2015), Faculty of the Informatics Institute and the co-founder and Informatics Lead of the Research and Informatics Service Center (RISC) at UAB (2011 to present). He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Clinical Informatics, and serves as the Assistant Dean for Clinical Education at the UAB School of Medicine. Dr. Willig’s passion includes designing software for data capture for research and clinical care including the 1917 HIV/AIDS Clinic Computerized Patient Record v.2 (used for chronic disease care for a clinic with over 2,000 active patients from 2006-2012), Patient Reported Outcomes Capture Platform a (real time PRO capture currently in over 11 clinical sites). Dr. Willig’s passion for education and software design led to the development of Kaizen Education, a platform that leverages gamification to enhance education (over 12,000 users). Dr. Willig also serves as the Informatics Core PI for the NIH/NIAMS funded UAB BIGDATA P30 grant (2020-2024) that will bring digital techniques to rheumatology, immunology, musculoskeletal and dermatology research communities.”
