STD/HIV Intensive Training
This course is designed as a two (2) or three (3) day intensive overview of STDs. It includes 11 hours of lecture over two days and one day of experiential training. Topics presented include gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, vaginal infections, genital herpes, HPV, hepatitis B, HSV, urethritis/cervicitis syndromes, HIV/AIDS, prevention strategies, nPEP/PrEP, caring for special populations, the role of the disease intervention specialist (D.I.S.) and case studies.
In person intensives are offered at the Jefferson County Department of Health (JCDH) in Birmingham, AL.
Target Audience: Healthcare professionals (physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, certified nurse midwives, nurses) in public or private practice who examine and treat individuals at risk for STDs/HIV. Applicants may include clinicians who work in family planning, adolescent health, women’s health, primary care, urgent care, or community health centers.
Course Objectives: At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe clinical features of reportable STDs: syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia.
- Understand current STD epidemiological landscape
- Describe clinical features of common bacterial STDs: syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia
- Recognize clinical presentations of common viral STDs: genital herpes, HPV
- Demonstrate improved skills in completing STD history and physical exam.
- Discuss clinical characteristics of common vaginal infections: trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis
- Integrate HIV risk assessment into patient care.
- Demonstrate precautions during specimen collection.
- Describe current approaches to STD/HIV prevention including pre-exposure prophylaxis and expedited partner therapy.
- Discuss evidence-based strategies for STD treatment, according to CDC’s STD Treatment Guidelines.
(Pandemic guidelines: optional in-person clinical training at the Jefferson County Department of Health (AL) can be scheduled on a case-by-case basis, contingent on the clinic operations).
Comprehensive STD/HIV Prevention
The Comprehensive STI/HIV Curriculum is a series on-demand didactic clinical presentations with a topic specific focus. Areas of training include, but are not limited to:
- PrEP – state-wide updates, policy, adherence implantation plans
- Syphilis – state-wide updates
- Motivational Interviewing
- Diagnostic Testing Interpretation
- LGBTQ+ Health Care Equity
- Sexual Health for Special Populations
- The Relationship Between STIs and Substance Abuse
- HIV + Mental Health
- Partner Notification/ Expedited Partner Therapy
Adolescent Sexual Health Symposium
The Adolescent Sexual Health Symposium is a review of the latest regional trends in adolescent sexuality, optimizing sexual history taking, screening for STIs, caring for LGBT adolescents and other special populations.
Topics may include, but are limited to:
- Adolescent Sexual Behavior + Recreational Drug Use
- State and Regional Adolescent STI Trends
- Sexual Health for Special Populations – LGBTQ+, LatinX, Pregnant young women and Infants
- Vaccination: HPV Prevention:
- Motivational Interviewing: Communicate Comfortably with Teens
1-Day Experiential Training for Public Health Providers (North Carolina)
The North Carolina New Public Health STI Provider Training and Examination Check Off. This training reviews the basics of sexually transmitted diseases and infections (STIs) and sexual health assessment and satisfies the experiential training requirements for NC DHHS new public health STI provider.The training is strictly hands-on clinical activity and is available to STD providers desiring this experience. There are no CEUs offered for this course.
Hot Topics in STI Management
This is a one-hour course on emerging issues related to STD/HIV screening, diagnosis, and management. There are no CEU’s provided for this course.
Annual STD/HIV State Updates
Statewide STD/HIV Updates provide updated information on recent trends, current management and highlight the innovative services offered by local health departments for a variety of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV, hepatitis and syphilis. This activity addresses best practices and advancements associated with accurate diagnosis and treatment of conditions in the area of genital dermatology. This knowledge-based activity is targeted to physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, nurses, public health workers and other health care providers and is offered in each of our services at least once per year.
